Politicians, public opinions differ regarding Russia in the EU- Brussels
Kartheiser was removed from the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group after his visit to Russia last month, an action the group labeled as “crossing a red line.” The MEP explained that his journey aimed to “re-establish some sort of dialogue” amid heightened global tensions.
In a recent interview, Kartheiser acknowledged anticipating a negative reaction from the ECR, given that several members hold “very pronounced anti-Russian stances.” He viewed his expulsion as reflective of the broader mindset toward Russia within the European Parliament.
“At times, I would think that we could touch upon war hysteria. We are not rational in many of our attitudes,” he remarked.
Contrasting this official stance, Kartheiser noted a very different response from ordinary Europeans. He shared that “people in the streets come to me, congratulate me, shake hands, tap me on the shoulder. It's unbelievable.” This suggests a significant disconnect between political elites and public sentiment regarding Russia in the EU.
